Bitwarden vs 1Password 2026: The Honest Developer Comparison

A deep, point-by-point comparison of the two password managers most developers actually choose between — CLI, SSH agent, self-hosting, pricing, team features, and the tradeoffs that actually matter.

Why This Comparison, and Not Others

If you're a developer shopping for a password manager in 2026, you've probably narrowed the list to two: Bitwarden and 1Password. Proton Pass is younger, Dashlane is consumer-focused, KeePassXC is a different philosophy entirely. These two — Bitwarden and 1Password — cover roughly 80% of serious-developer mindshare, and they've been converging on features for years.

This guide goes deeper than a roundup. Where the two differ, we'll explain why one design choice works better for a specific workflow, so you can decide based on how you actually work, not a feature-count bar chart.

TL;DR

  • Pick 1Password if: you're on a team that will pay for it, you use many SSH keys (GitHub org switching, AWS bastions, self-hosted Git), you prefer polish and zero-friction over configuration, or you need mature CI secrets automation.
  • Pick Bitwarden if: you want open source, self-hosting, or the best value for individual use. The Premium tier at $10/year does 90% of what 1Password does at a tenth of the cost.
  • For most individual developers: Bitwarden. The value is overwhelming.
  • For most professional teams: 1Password. The team-specific features — Secrets Automation, Developer Tools integrations, audit completeness — are worth the extra spend if the company is paying.

Pricing in Detail

These prices change every quarter or two. Verify on the vendor site before committing.

1Password (2026):

Bitwarden (2026):

  • Free — unlimited passwords, unlimited devices, one user, no TOTP
  • Premium — $10/year, one user, adds TOTP, attachments, emergency access, Bitwarden Authenticator
  • Families — $40/year for 6 users
  • Teams — $4/user/mo
  • Enterprise — $6/user/mo

The real spread: $48/year vs $10/year for individual use. That's 4.8× the price for 1Password. Per-seat on teams, the gap is narrower (1Password $7.99 vs Bitwarden $6) but 1Password includes more at that price.

CLI: op vs bw

This is where the products diverge most for developers, and where 1Password's polish shows clearly. Both have CLIs. They are not equivalent tools.

1Password: op

op is the reason many professional developers pay for 1Password.

The op:// URI scheme is elegant — it's a path to a secret anywhere in your vault, composable in any config file. op run injects secrets into a subprocess's environment without ever writing them to disk.

The 1Password GitHub Action for CI is first-class. Service accounts are easy. Everything feels designed for scripting.

Bitwarden: bw

bw is capable but feels like a CLI written second, not a core product.

The friction is real. BW_SESSION management is manual. Piping JSON through jq is fine, but there's no equivalent of op inject or op run. CI usage works via the CLI but requires more wiring.

bw serve is a nice escape hatch — run a local REST API against your vault and hit it from scripts. It closes much of the gap with op but you still do more integration yourself.

Verdict: op is clearly better for heavy CLI use. bw is good enough for occasional scripting.

SSH Agent

1Password 8 (released 2022) added SSH agent support as a native replacement for ssh-agent. This is a bigger deal than the docs make it sound.

How it works: your SSH private keys live encrypted in your 1Password vault. 1Password acts as the SSH agent (set IdentityAgent in ~/.ssh/config to 1Password's socket). When any SSH operation needs your key — git pull, ssh user@host, scp — 1Password prompts for biometric auth. The key never touches disk.

This solves several real developer problems at once:

  • Multiple GitHub accounts. Tag one key "personal" and one "work-acme", commit-sign with the right one automatically based on the repo.
  • No more ~/.ssh hygiene panic when you get a new laptop. Your keys are in the vault, not on the stolen disk.
  • Commit signing via SSH (GitHub supports this since 2022) works without a separate GPG setup.

Bitwarden added SSH agent support in 2024, later than 1Password, and it's less mature. It works for basic use but lacks features like per-key biometric prompts and the polished macOS/Windows keychain integration.

If you juggle SSH keys daily, 1Password's agent alone may justify the price difference. If you use one SSH key or you're fine with ssh-add, it's a non-factor.

Self-Hosting

This is the one category where Bitwarden simply wins — 1Password doesn't offer self-hosting at all.

Bitwarden has two options:

Official Bitwarden server — the production server, written in C#, runs via Docker Compose with a MS SQL Server dependency. Heavyweight (~1.5 GB RAM minimum), supports all enterprise features. Free for personal use, same clients as the hosted version sync to it.

Vaultwarden — an unofficial Rust rewrite of the server, API-compatible with all Bitwarden clients. Runs in ~100 MB of RAM, SQLite by default. Ideal for Raspberry Pi, home lab, or a tiny VPS. Maintained actively, widely deployed.

Why self-host? Three reasons:

  1. Trust model. You don't have to trust Bitwarden Inc.'s infrastructure — only your own.
  2. Data residency. Legal/compliance reasons where data must stay in a specific jurisdiction.
  3. Curiosity and ownership. Some developers just want to.

1Password's response has been "our SOC 2, ISO 27001, and public Secret Key architecture make self-hosting unnecessary." True, but it doesn't eliminate every trust concern. If self-hosting matters to you, Bitwarden is the only choice here.

Browser Extensions

Both products ship browser extensions for every major browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, Brave).

1Password's extension is noticeably snappier. Autofill rarely misses. The inline menu appears reliably on unusual login forms. Keyboard shortcut to fill (Cmd+Shift+X / Ctrl+Shift+X) works without thinking.

Bitwarden's extension is functional and has improved in 2024 and 2025. Autofill occasionally misses on complex React-based forms (forms that render inputs lazily or render outside the tab order). The inline menu works. Speed is acceptable but not imperceptible.

For daily use, the gap isn't dealbreaking, but 1Password's extension is the benchmark.

Mobile Apps

iOS: Both integrate with iOS Password AutoFill. Both support FaceID / TouchID unlock. Both handle one-time codes. 1Password's UI feels more polished, Bitwarden's more utilitarian. Both work.

Android: Same pattern. Both integrate with Android Autofill Framework, both biometric-unlock, both offer accessibility-service-based autofill for apps that don't support the autofill framework. 1Password's UI is more refined, Bitwarden is faster on older devices.

In daily use, you unlock with a fingerprint and the app fills the field. The differences are cosmetic.

TOTP Support

Both store TOTP seeds and generate 6-digit codes. Both copy the code to clipboard when you fill the password. Both sync TOTP codes across devices.

1Password: TOTP is free on any paid plan. It's a first-class field type in items.

Bitwarden: TOTP requires Premium ($10/year) for personal vaults; free for Business / Teams users. Implementation is equivalent otherwise.

Caveat that applies to both: storing TOTP in the same vault as the password defeats the "two factors" part of 2FA for any attacker who compromises the vault. For high-value accounts (primary email, bank, GitHub), use a separate authenticator app (Aegis on Android, Raivo on iOS) or a YubiKey. For the 200 low-value accounts, same-vault TOTP is a reasonable convenience.

Team Features

If you're buying for a team, the comparison changes.

1Password Business at $7.99/user/mo includes:

  • Secrets Automation. 1Password Connect + service accounts for CI pipelines. Direct integration with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker Compose.
  • Developer tools integrations. Shell plugins (op plugin — the CLI plugs into AWS, Heroku, Digital Ocean, and more with vault-backed auth).
  • Granular vault access. Users see only vaults they're granted.
  • Advanced protection. Admin approval for new device sign-ins, IP restrictions, auth factor policies.
  • SSO + SCIM on the Business tier.
  • Audit log with full event history.
  • Activity reports for compliance.
  • Custom groups.

Bitwarden Enterprise at $6/user/mo includes:

  • SSO + SCIM.
  • Policies — enforce master password strength, require 2FA, restrict vault exports.
  • Event logs with retention.
  • Organization vault for shared items.
  • Directory Connector for AD / LDAP sync.
  • Bitwarden CLI for CI.

Bitwarden's team features have improved a lot through 2024–2025 but still feel like a "password manager with team layers" vs 1Password's "vault platform that happens to include passwords." For organizations that need to inject secrets into production systems, 1Password's Secrets Automation is more mature.

Teams Starter on 1Password ($19.95/mo flat for 10 users) is a great deal for small teams — cheaper per-seat than Bitwarden Teams for the same group size.

Security Architecture

Both use zero-knowledge architecture: your master password never leaves your device, the server only sees encrypted blobs. Both use AES-256, PBKDF2 or Argon2 for key derivation, and authenticated encryption.

The meaningful difference is 1Password's Secret Key — a 128-bit random value generated during signup, stored on-device, and required alongside your master password to decrypt the vault. Even if an attacker obtains your master password and breaches 1Password's servers, they still need the Secret Key (which is never on the server).

Bitwarden doesn't have an equivalent. A sufficiently dedicated attacker with your master password and a Bitwarden server breach could (theoretically) decrypt your vault. In practice, Bitwarden's threat model is still strong — the server only sees blobs, and Argon2id key derivation is tough to crack at scale — but 1Password's design adds another layer.

If your threat model includes "sophisticated attacker with server access," 1Password has the edge. For everyone else, both are more than sufficient.

Open Source

Bitwarden: Server, clients, and CLI are all open source, on GitHub, under AGPLv3 (server) and GPLv3 (clients). You can audit every line.

1Password: Closed source. The white papers describing the security architecture are public and thorough; the implementation is not.

For many developers, open source is load-bearing — "don't trust, verify." For others it's a nice-to-have. If you're in the first camp, this alone decides it.

Migration Between Them

Both products import from the other via CSV or their respective export formats. The migration is straightforward; allow a Saturday.

One gotcha: TOTP seeds don't always transfer cleanly. Export from either to CSV and TOTP seed fields can be dropped or malformed. Plan to re-enroll 2FA for a handful of accounts.

SSH keys don't transfer at all. You'd re-add them to the new vault. (Realistically, SSH keys are usually on disk first and imported to the vault — if you're moving, re-import.)

Who Should Pick Which — Specific Scenarios

Solo dev, tight budget, values open source: Bitwarden Premium ($10/year). Done.

Solo dev paid by an employer with no preference: 1Password Individual. Your employer can afford $48/year, and the op CLI and SSH agent save you time daily.

Small team (5–10 people), founder paying: 1Password Teams Starter at $19.95/mo flat. Best per-team-member deal, and Secrets Automation makes the CI story easier.

Mid-sized team (30+), wants open source: Bitwarden Enterprise. The self-hosting option and AGPLv3 license win for open-source-first companies.

Mid-sized team (30+), wants least friction: 1Password Business. Developer Tools integrations are worth the $2/user premium.

Security consultant / infosec professional who audits their tools: Bitwarden self-hosted via Vaultwarden. You can read every line and deploy on your own infrastructure.

Anyone who's comfortable paying and doesn't want to think about it: 1Password Individual. The polish is real.

Try Both — They Both Have Free Trials

Both offer free trials (1Password) or a permanent free tier (Bitwarden). Run them side-by-side for a week:

  • Install the browser extension. Log into 20 sites. Which autofills more reliably?
  • Add an SSH key. Clone a private repo. How's the prompt experience?
  • Try the CLI — fetch a password via op read or bw get. Which fits your shell?
  • Check the mobile app on a site you use often. Face ID / fingerprint unlock, autofill, copy-TOTP.

A week of real use will tell you more than any feature matrix.

Generate Good Passwords in Either

Bitwarden gives you 90% of 1Password at 10% of the price, plus open source, plus self-hosting. For most individuals, that math is decisive.

1Password gives you a polished, opinionated product with a best-in-class CLI, a native SSH agent, and the smoothest team workflows on the market. For professional teams, and for individuals who use SSH keys daily, the premium is usually justified.

Neither is a wrong answer. The question is which tradeoff fits your workflow — and, critically, who's paying.
